Understand your potential points score for Australia’s skilled migration pathways and take the next step towards a clear migration plan.

The General Skilled Migration points test can help you explore whether subclasses 189, 190 or 491 may be relevant to your circumstances. Your points score is only one part of the assessment, so professional review is important before relying on an estimate.

How does the GSM points test work?

The points test considers information such as your age, English language ability, qualifications, skilled employment, Australian study, partner factors and nomination pathway. A minimum score of 65 points is generally required to submit an Expression of Interest, but reaching 65 points does not guarantee an invitation.

Invitation outcomes can also depend on your nominated occupation, skills assessment, state or territory requirements, regional pathway, competition and the rules applying at the relevant time.

Which skilled visas may use the points test?

Subclass 189

The Skilled Independent pathway may suit applicants who do not require state or territory nomination, subject to eligibility and invitation requirements.

Subclass 190

The Skilled Nominated pathway involves nomination by an Australian state or territory and may provide an additional points benefit.

Subclass 491

The Skilled Work Regional pathway supports eligible applicants intending to live and work in a designated regional area.

Main factors that can affect your score

Age

Age brackets can affect the number of points available to you at the relevant stage of the application.

English

Your English level and the evidence accepted for your circumstances may affect your points claim.

Qualifications

Eligible doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s and other recognised qualifications may contribute points.

Skilled employment

Relevant skilled work in Australia or overseas may contribute points when properly evidenced.

Australian study

Eligible Australian study and specialist education may provide additional points in some circumstances.

Regional study

Study completed in an eligible regional area may be relevant to additional points.

Partner factors

Your partner’s English, age, skills and assessment status may affect the points available.

Nomination

State, territory and regional nomination options can change the best strategy for your profile.

What can change your estimated points score?

  • Your age when points are assessed
  • English test results and test validity
  • The occupation listed on your skills assessment
  • Whether your employment is closely related to your nominated occupation
  • Qualification recognition and course requirements
  • Partner evidence and partner eligibility
  • State or territory nomination criteria
  • Changes to visa rules, occupation lists or invitation rounds

Important points-test reminder

A calculator or indicative estimate cannot confirm visa eligibility, nomination, invitation or grant. Claims must be supported by the correct documents, and the requirements can depend on dates and your individual circumstances.

EMK Global can review your profile and help you understand the evidence and pathway options that may apply.

Documents to prepare for an assessment

  • Passport and identity documents
  • English test results or eligible English evidence
