Requirements

  • Have an approved Parent Sponsor before you can lodge an application for this visa
  • Lodge your visa application within 6 months of the sponsorship approval, or 60 days if you are given a permission to apply in Australia.

Visa Application Charge

  • Visa charges are paid in two instalments. For 2026–27: AUD 6,370 in total for a stay of up to 3 years (AUD 1,515 + AUD 4,855)
  • AUD 12,440 in total for a stay of up to 5 years (AUD 1,515 + AUD 10,925)
  • Your child must first be approved as a parent sponsor, which has its own application fee
  • Charges as at 1 July 2026. Check the Home Affairs visa pricing page before lodging

Processing Time

  • For visa applicant: 90% of the visas are processed in 8 Months
  • For sponsorship: 90% of the visas are processed in 70 Days

Your Obligations

  • 8103: No paid work
  • 8303: Not be disruptive
  • 8501: Maintain adequate health insurance
  • 8531: Must leave before visa expiry
  • 8550: Notify change of details
  • 8564: Must not engage in criminal conduct
  • 8609: Notify new details

How to apply for the 870 visa

  • Step 1: Gather your documents of the sponsor (identity, relationship evidences, etc)
  • Step 2: Complete the Visa Application Form for the sponsor via the online IMMI Account
  • Step 3: Pay the Sponsor Visa Application Fee
  • Step 4: Receive an approved Parent Sponsor
  • Step 5: Gather your documents (identity, relationship evidences, etc)
  • Step 6: Complete the Visa Application Form via the online IMMI Account
  • Step 7: Pay the Visa Application Fee
  • Step 8: Complete the Health examination

Does the visa 870 lead to permanent residency?

No, the visa 870 does not lead to permanent residency in Australia. In fact, holding this type of visa makes it very difficult -if not impossible – for your parents to obtain any of the Permanent Parent Visas, such as Subclass 103,Subclass 143, or Subclass 804. They would have to wait until the visa 870 expires, leave Australia, and then apply for the appropriate permanent visa, wait for it to be processed, and finally come to live with you permanently – provided that they meet the requirements.

Can i get a 10-year parent visa in Australia?
The visa 870 is not issued for ten years from the start, but it can be “extended” to allow your parents to stay in Australia for a maximum of ten years, in periods of three or five years. Before your parents’ current visa expires, they must apply for a new one and you must re-apply for the right to sponsor them.
If your parents want to apply for the next visa while in Australia, this must be requested in your sponsorship application. The visa charge is paid again for each new visa (AUD 6,370 for up to 3 years or AUD 12,440 for up to 5 years at 2026–27 rates). Their combined time in Australia on 870 visas cannot exceed 10 years.
Is balance of family test required for the visa 870?
No, you do not need a Balance of Family Test for the visa 870. This test measures the family ties of a parent to their children in Australia and is one of the most important requirements for permanent parent visa applications. Since the visa 870 is temporary, the Immigration does not ask you to provide this test.
Can I Include My Family in This Sponsored Parent Visa Subclass 870?
No, the Sponsored Parent Visa Subclass 870 does not allow the applicants to include family members.
Can Parents Work with an 870 Visa?
The Visa Subclass 870 does not allow a parent to work in Australia during their stay.
