What Do the Rankings Measure?

THE evaluates universities across five broad areas:

  • Teaching.
  • Research environment.
  • Research quality.
  • Industry.
  • International outlook.

The results reflect institutional performance across these areas. They should be read alongside information about the particular course a student intends to study.

How Should Students Use University Rankings?

Study Australia recommends considering rankings together with course content, location, entry requirements, learning experience and student support. The strongest choice is the university and course that match your individual goals.

To make your comparison practical, create a shortlist and ask:

Area  Questions to Explore
Course suitability  Does the curriculum cover the knowledge and skills you want to develop?
Entry requirements  Do you meet the academic, English and prerequisite requirements?
Budget  What are the tuition fees, living costs and scholarship conditions?
Practical learning  What placements, projects or industry activities are available within the course?
Research study  Are suitable supervisors, facilities and research areas available?
Student experience  Does the campus location and learning format suit your needs?

Check these details directly with each university, particularly where information varies between courses or campuses.
