Requirement

You must be aged under 45 to be invited to apply for the visa

  • Your occupation must be on the combined list of eligible skilled occupation
  • For your application to be valid, you must declare that you have a suitable skills assessment at time invitation.
    You will need to provide a copy of this skills assessment with your application
  • You must lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) in Skill Select and be invited to apply for this visa
  • You must have an estimated score of at least 65 points to be invited to apply for this visa
  • You must be either nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency or indicate that you will be sponsored by an eligible relative
  • All state and territory government agencies have their own criteria for deciding who they will nominate.Each state has its own requirements:

  • 8515: Must not marry or enter a de facto relationship before entry
  • 8578: Notify us if your passport or contact details change
  • 8579: Live, study and work in a designated regional area
  • 8580: Provide evidence of your live, study or work address if requested
  • 8581: You must attend an interview if we ask you to in a letter

How to Apply for an Australian visa?

  • Step 1: Check the eligibility criteria on the skilled occupation list
  • Step 2: Submit your skill assessment and get a positive outcome
  • Step 3: Submit your expression of interest (EOI)
  • Step 4: Receive an invitation to apply for visa
  • Step 5: Gather your documents (identity, Skills assessment documents, EOI documents, etc)
  • Step 6: Complete the Visa Application Form via the online IMMI Account within 60 days of the invitation
  • Step 7: Pay the Visa Application Fee
  • Step 8: Complete the biometrics collection and health examination

Where are the designated regional areas?

Designated regional areas will include everywhere in Australia except Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. You can check if your residential is designated regional areas or not in designated regional area 

How does visa 491 lead to permanent residency?

Visa 491 is a 5-year visa, allowing you to apply for the permanent residence through the Subclass 191 – Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional). In order to apply for the permanent visa you will need to live, work or study in the designated regional area for at least three years, whilst holding a 491 visa

If I have not worked in the regional area for 3 years, can I still apply for PR?

If you do not work in the regional area for 3 years, you do not meet the requirements to apply for the 191 permanent visa. You may be able to move to another regional area

Do I need an employer to sponsor me for visa 491?

You do not need an employer to sponsor you for visa 491. However, many regional or state may require you to work and live in a state for nomination approval

Can I apply for PR while on visa 491?

If you live and work in a regional area for three years on the subclass 491 visa and meet the requirements for at least three years, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa.
