Student Visa Dependants Australia 2026: Who Can Still Include Family Members?
Australia’s Student Visa family member rules changed on 2 October 2026. While new restrictions apply to many applicants, exemptions remain available for certain international students.
For students planning to study in Australia with a spouse, partner or dependent children, understanding these changes is essential before submitting a Student Visa application.
The updated rules affect both first-time Student Visa applicants and existing students applying for a further visa. They also change whether family members can apply later to join the primary visa holder.
Here is what international students and their families need to know.
What Changed on 2 October 2026?
Under the new settings, applicants generally cannot include family members in a new Student Visa (subclass 500) application unless an exemption applies.
This restriction applies to both initial and further Student Visa applications.
A separate change prevents family members from applying as subsequent entrants after the primary Student Visa has been granted. Students should therefore review their family arrangements before lodging their application.
The changes do not automatically cancel or alter existing Student Visas.
Who Can Still Include Family Members?
Certain applicants remain eligible to include qualifying family members, subject to meeting the applicable requirements.
| Exemption category | Family inclusion |
| Doctoral students | Permitted, subject to eligibility |
| Nationals of eligible ASEAN countries | Permitted, subject to eligibility |
| Nationals of eligible Pacific countries | Permitted, subject to eligibility |
| Fully funded foreign government scholarship recipients | Permitted, subject to eligibility |
| Students sponsored by DFAT or the Australian Department of Defence | Permitted, subject to eligibility |
Transitional arrangements may also apply to some families already in Australia.
An exemption allows family inclusion to be considered; it does not guarantee that any applicant will receive a visa. The primary applicant and each included family member must meet the relevant visa criteria.
Which Family Members Can Be Included?
Eligible Student Visa family members generally include:
- A spouse or eligible de facto partner.
- An unmarried dependent child of the applicant or their partner who is under 18.
Parents, adult siblings and other relatives do not qualify simply because they are related to the student.
Applicants should prepare evidence of their relationships and check the financial, health insurance and other requirements relevant to each family member.
Families with school-aged children should also investigate schooling arrangements and potential fees before relocating.
Can Family Members Apply Later as Subsequent Entrants?
Under the new rules, family members cannot apply separately as subsequent entrants after the primary Student Visa has been granted. The official guidance states that there are no exemptions to this restriction.
This is separate from the exemptions allowing certain students to include family members in their initial or further application.
For example, a student who qualifies for a family inclusion exemption should not assume that their spouse or child can obtain a Student Visa through a subsequent entrant application later.
Students should distinguish between declaring family members and including them as visa applicants. Declaring a relationship does not, by itself, mean that the family member has applied for or received a visa.
What About Families Already in Australia?
Transitional arrangements may allow some students to include the same family members in a further Student Visa application.
According to the official guidance, this may be possible where:
- The family members were included in the student’s visa or visa application before 2 October 2026; and
- The student is eligible to apply for a further Student Visa while in Australia.
Students should check both requirements before relying on these arrangements.
Holding a current visa with dependants does not automatically establish eligibility for the next application.
What Happens to Applications Lodged Before 2 October 2026?
Student Visa applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue to be assessed under the rules that applied when they were lodged. This includes applications that already included family members.
For example, an application validly lodged with a spouse before the commencement date is not automatically subject to the new family inclusion restrictions.
All applicants must still satisfy the requirements applicable to their application.
Does a Family Inclusion Exemption Allow an Onshore Application?
Family inclusion and application location are separate questions.
A student may qualify to include their spouse or children but still need to apply for the Student Visa from outside Australia.
Before lodging, applicants should establish:
- Whether they qualify to include family members.
- Whether they can apply while in Australia.
- Where they must be when the visa is granted.
Students should consider these requirements together when arranging study dates, travel and family relocation.
Do These Rules Also Apply to the Temporary Graduate Visa?
The Government has announced further restrictions on family inclusion for Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) applicants.
However, the Study Australia update published on 7 October 2026 describes this as a reform still being progressed.
Students should check the current subclass 485 requirements rather than assume that the Student Visa changes apply identically to Temporary Graduate Visa applications.
Planning Your Student Visa Application With Family
Before applying, review your exemption eligibility, application location and the timing of each family member’s application.
Prepare the required relationship documents, assess the costs of supporting your family and confirm appropriate health insurance arrangements. Where children will accompany you, include schooling and childcare costs in your planning.
These steps can help you make informed decisions about studying in Australia with your family.
